How My AMU Experience Helped Me Achieve Academic and Professional Excellence

As a current candidate for the United States Congress from the 5th District of Illinois and former FBI official and U.S. Department of State foreign service officer, I am devoted to continued sacrifice, duty, and public service.

American Military University impacted my life in two important ways. Firstly, it provided a mechanism and a platform from which I could pursue a master’s degree while being deployed overseas. I spent most of my service and professional career in conflict and war zones like Iraq, in addition to North Africa and over 65 other countries. As education is a core value within my family, I am thankful to have found a university such as AMU that allowed the continuation of formal higher education while living and working around the world.

We all know what makes us comfortable and many of us stray into the ‘unknown’ to push ourselves beyond our limits. The challenge for most of us is that we don’t have someone there to coach and help us be courageous. The faculty and staff at American Public University System (APUS) provided just the support I needed to step into my “courage zone” and be successful.

An Inside Look at How APUS is Bringing Momentum™ to Competency-based Education

As we have been training APUS faculty who will serve as mentors and subject matter experts in the new APUS Momentum competency-based education program, we have used the analogy of putting our students in the driver’s seat of their educational journey. And right there with them in the passenger seat is the faculty mentor, acting as navigator based on the student’s personalized learning map. Waiting in the ‘pit,’ by extension, is the “crew” of subject matter experts that will provide the student with all they need in order to gain the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to master the discipline competencies.

How I Bring Life to the Online Classroom

When I tell people that I am a professor of history in an online classroom they sometimes frown skeptically and ask, “How does that work?” Some who have never experienced distance learning perceive my work as a substandard replica of a traditional classroom. They ask, “How can you interact with your students?” Or they exclaim, “Your poor students can’t pay attention to lectures through a computer screen!”

My reaction is first to tell them that they must have never had a professor at a brick-and-mortar university drone on from behind a podium in front of a large classroom. My point? The venue does not guarantee the value of the education.

Significant Forces Changing the Higher Education Market: Impact of Non-Traditional Students

The landscape of higher education has experienced more change in the past decade than it has at any time since World War II. There are a number of influences that have fostered this change, with the most significant being the Post-9/11 GI Bill afforded to our veterans of the global war on terrorism, which allows this unique population to pursue higher education opportunities. Other changes that have contributed to the mosaic include Generation X’ers seeking career advancement through higher education, and Millennials—or so called “digital natives”—who bring much higher tech-savvy capabilities (and expectations) to the table, the proliferation of online higher education, and the push for more competency-based education programs.
