Assisting our Students’ Career Journey

Careers and career development is more and more a focus of higher education today. At APUS, we are and aim to be among the universities that prepare students to be work and career ready, whether first time to a job, new to a career, or advancing in either.

The mission of the Department of Career Services (DCS) is to provide students and alumni with an equitable career education, focused on career readiness, building professional networks, introducing viable employment opportunities, and positioning them to make a meaningful contribution to their field and global society. With a staff consisting of career coaches and employer relations specialists, DCS works to foster the educational advancement of students and alumni by assisting in their career journeys.

As AMU and APU students and alumni begin their career journeys, it is important for them to properly showcase their skills and abilities to employers. The Career Coaching team offers a range of personalized services, such as career coaching, resume reviews, and mock interviews, to help best prepare students entering the job marketplace. In 2015 alone, over 7,000 unique students accessed these personalized services. In addition, DCS has created approximately 40 program-specific resources covering 90+ degree programs that discuss useful skills within a given field, a variety of career options, as well as professional organizations and associations that will help our students and alumni thrive as professionals.

The Employer Relations team plans, organizes, and implements several industry specific virtual career fairs (VCFs) throughout the year, inviting highly sought after employers and providing them the opportunity to connect with our students and alumni in real time. The VCF is a virtual platform by which students and alumni can interface with employers, while remaining in the comfort of their own home. Much like a traditional career fair, students should come prepared to meet with perspective employers, ready to market themselves as top notch candidates. Students and alumni also have the ability to upload their resumes to the university job board giving employers an opportunity to review ahead of time. Our job board also allows students to view career resources, job announcements, and connect with a career coach.

As a department, members of the career services staff attend both marketing and partner events nationwide in an effort to spread the good name of AMU and APU. Our career services team members are featured as blog contributors, present to student organizations, and attend industry advisory council meetings. In addition, many have a variety of recognized industry certifications and have also been recognized by their peers for their contributions to their field. As AMU and APU faculty educate and inspire our students towards their academic objectives, it is the hope of the DCS that we are able to assist those students with realizing their career goals.
